The Counseling & Wellness Center serves undergraduate students at the OUAZ Surprise residential campus and our licensed mental health counselor is Tracey Robinson, M.A., LPC. The OUAZ Counseling & Wellness Center is located in the Recreation & Fitness building by O’Dell Center, office #175.

The OUAZ Counseling & Wellness Center supports the educational mission of the University and enables students by fostering the optimal well-being of all OUAZ students.  We accomplish this by providing the highest quality compassionate care, offering exceptional health and wellness programs, and promoting an environment that reinforces students' overall health in order to Be Well, Feel Well & Do Well!

College life is an exciting journey filled with new experiences, learning and growth.  But it can also bring unique challenges, stress and moments of feeling overwhelmed.  At OUAZ, we understand that prioritizing your mental well-being is just as important as your academic success.

The OUAZ Counseling & Wellness Center is here to provide a safe, confidential, and supportive space where you can explore your feelings, develop coping strategies and navigate the ups and downs of college life.  You don't have to face it alone.

Services Offered Through The OUAZ Counseling & Wellness Center Are Free and Confidential.

We provide consultation, short-term counseling and needed referrals; as well as advocacy, training and education. We support students experiencing the stresses of daily life as well as those who meet criteria for mental health disorders and may benefit from being connected to off-campus resources such as psychiatry, longer-term therapy, or specialized treatment.

Meet Your Counselor

"Hi, it's great to meet you. I'm Tracey Robinson, and I'll be your mental health counselor here at OUAZ. My role is to provide a confidential and supportive space where you can discuss any challenges you might be facing, whether they're related to adjusting to college life, academic stress, relationships, or anything else that's on your mind.

Many students find that college brings a lot of new experiences, and with them, new stressors. It's completely normal to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or down at times. My goal is to work with you to understand what you're going through, develop coping strategies, and help you thrive during your time here.

This first session is really about getting to know each other a bit. I'll ask you some questions to understand what brings you in today and what you're hoping to get out of counseling. And of course, I encourage you to ask me any questions you have as well. There's no pressure to share everything at once; we'll go at your pace.

I'm here to listen, offer support, and help you navigate any mental health concerns you might have.  Please use one of the methods listed above to schedule your appoitment.

Programs can range in length (i.e. 15 min to 1.5 hours) and are usually conducted at a campus location. There is no fee for an outreach event presented by the Counseling & Wellness Center. Presentations can be tailored to meet specific needs of an audience. Ideally, please provide at least 2-3 weeks’ notice.

**For presentation/tabling event requests, please contact the OUAZ Counseling Center and/or the Student Affairs office**

  • Brief Mental Health Presentations (15-30min)
    • OUAZ Counseling & Wellness services overview (auto incorporated into ‘Intro to Academy’ classes)

    • How to address with students and provide support
    • When and how to refer for services

Faculty and staff may contact the Counseling & Wellness Center for Consultation, Support and Resources regarding their students throughout the academic year.

In addition, the Counseling & Wellness Center can assist faculty and staff in responding in the hours/days following an emergency. Depending on the nature of the incident, individuals who are directly affected may be supported by the CARE Team and referred to services at the Counseling & Wellness Center. In other situations, the Counseling & Wellness Center may recommend a group intervention. Some of the benefits of a group “debriefing” is reduction of acute distress, increased group member cohesion, and fostering of resilience. In addition, the facilitators can identify participants in need of further support and assistance. Attendance at such interventions should be voluntary. Counseling Center staff will collaborate with faculty and staff to make an informed decision as to which type of intervention would be most appropriate for affected individuals.

In some situations, Counseling Center staff may be requested to be present when university staff or faculty share news of a traumatic event with students in a classroom or residence hall. In such cases, the counselor is available primarily to support any person who may have difficulty when receiving the news.

How Faculty & Staff Can Refer Students to OUAZ Counseling & Wellness Center:

  • In low/medium risk situations, where no immediate danger exists - please notify your supervisor about the student of concern. The information will be passed on to the CARE Team for a multidisciplinary approach and a referral to the Counseling & Wellness Center and other appropriate services will be initiated. You can also speak directly to the counselor, however outreach at that time will be limited to the counseling center.
  • In high risk situations, where a student may be an immediate danger to self or others - please notify Campus Safety and Dean of Student Affairs immediately, for a wellness check to be completed. The counselor will be notified, as needed and appropriate.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • It is always best to speak to the student about your concern for them and if the student agrees to a referral to the Counseling & Wellness Center, please help them (additionally, you can fill out the attached referral form and email it to the counselor, if you’d like to be notified of student’s follow through - )
  • When a referral is made without discussion with student, the process does not allow for referral source to be notified of outcome of referral.
    • Counselor contacts student to schedule. Referral will be closed if student does not respond to counselor’s efforts to schedule within 7 business days.

Anonymous reporting about various topics University-wide is available through the link below (i.e. student safety concern, alcohol/drugs violations, sexual harassment/misconduct, ADA matters) -

**Please note this is not counseling center specific, nor counseling center monitored reporting tool
